Personality

Rookie is a skittish little thing that is wary of others, but is perfectly friendly... unless you pick him up then you may get "bitten".

It doesnt hurt you as Mallegants dont have any teeth, so perhaps "Gummed" is a better word...

Either ways Rookie hates heights and his race is a prey species, low down in the food chain. Hes instinctively programmed to be careful of other living creatures that are larger than him or show hostility.

Design traits

Rookie is a homebrew species known as a Mallegant, a plant based creature that obtains its energy via photosynthesis and nutrients along with hydration with roots that extend from their hips.

They do not use their mouth for eating or breathing, they mostly use it for communication, as their vocal chords are located at the back of their mouth.

They have a single small sack that fills with air in their tummy area which allows them to communicate with each other, however they do not require this sack to live or function.

This means that they need very little air or oxygen to survive. They are able to stay underwater for several weeks before surfacing. some aquatic species of malignant don't ever rise to the surface at all, and use bioluminescence to talk to one another.

Mallegants reproduce like any other plant, at certain times of the year, flowers will form between the leaves on their head to be pollenated by insects, and form seeds in the mallegants cheeks.

As the seeds become mature they fall out or are spat out by the mallegant, which then take root and sprout a shoot with a single leaf above the ground after a couple of days.

The shoot will not grow much above ground as the mallegant forms largely underground for 3 -4 weeks. When they are ready they simply climb out of the ground and start walking around, they are incredibly small at this point in their lives and can get chewed at by large insects or gastropods such as slugs, snails, beetles or crickets and grasshoppers.

Fields of where mallegant sprout will be peppered with tiny holes after they climb out of them, essentially cultivating the soil.

Many mallegant do not make it to full seniorhood as they are easily picked off by larger predators. They shed their leaves in late autumn and for every winter they experience they gain additional leaves on their head the following year which grants them the unusual ability to become more spritely as they grow older.

Eventually they will shed their leaves for the last time and become trees

History and inspiration

So mallegants where a concept of the more prey-like animals in my universe, I have a lot of mid-high predatory animals and creatures, but only one species that was more prey-like (The Chikakis) and even they had ways to defend themselves...

I really wanted to make a small plant based creature to fulfill that role, one that could re-produce tonnes of its own kind at once (and these guys can, they make about 300 seeds in a season per mallegant) but doesnt have much in the way of defences aside from their size and ability to hide.

They have no scent (aside from when they are flowering) and can use their naturally formed foliage to blend in with bushes and other plant species. There are also many different subspecies, often denoted by their colors and leaf types
